日本初の女性総理の候補の１人として注目される上川外務大臣は、WPS（女性・平和・安全保障）を外交理念とし、女性活躍のロールモデルをつくりたいと日頃から訴えている。

そこで、一昨日の参議院外交防衛委員会では、権力と戦う４人の女性たちへの期待と評価を質問した。

アメリカ大統領選挙の共和党予備選挙で大活躍したニッキー・ヘイリーさん。死亡したロシアの反政府活動家 アレクセイ・ナワリヌイ氏の妻ユリア・ナワルナヤさん。中国政府、香港政府の弾圧を受けカナダへ亡命している民主活動家の周庭（アグネス・チョウ）さん。そして、アメリカ大統領選挙についての発言でも注目された「世界の歌姫」テイラー・スイフトさんの４人。いずれも自由と民主主義、人権を守るために権力と戦う現代のジャンヌ・ダルクだ！

女性活躍を推進する大臣として、熱いエールを送っていただけるとものと思っていた。

しかし、下記の動画をご覧いただけば分かるように、４人への評価は、「ロールモデルの一人」、「注視してまいりたい」、「大統領選挙に係ることについては控えたい」と極めて消極的なものだった。

権力と戦う女性たちへの連帯と政治家としての明確なメッセージを示して欲しかったががっかりだ。　

Foreign Minister Kamikawa, noted as one of the potential candidates for Japan’s first female prime minister, advocates for WPS (Women, Peace, and Security) as a diplomatic principle and aims to create role models for women’s empowerment. In this context, she was asked in the Senate Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee the day before yesterday about her expectations and appraisal of four women battling against power.

These women include Nikki Haley, who made a significant impact in the Republican primary of the U.S. presidential election; Yulia Navalny, the widow of the deceased Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny; Agnes Chow, a democracy activist who fled to Canada due to oppression from the Chinese and Hong Kong governments; and Taylor Swift, the “world’s pop icon,” noted for her comments on the U.S. presidential election. All are modern-day Joans of Arc fighting for freedom, democracy, and human rights.

As a minister promoting women’s empowerment, it was anticipated that she would offer enthusiastic support to these women. However, as can be seen in the following video, her appraisal of the four was extremely reserved, describing them as “one of the role models,” expressing a desire to “keep an eye on” them, and preferring to “refrain from commenting on matters related to the presidential election.”

It was disappointing not to see a clear message of solidarity with these women fighting against power and a definitive stance as a politician.
